Netflix reported another profitable quarter, beat earnings expectations, generated record revenue, and continues making impressive progress with advertising and pricing. On the surface, those sound like the ingredients for a higher stock price.

Instead, shares were hit hard.

The market wasn’t focused on what Netflix accomplished this quarter.

It was focused on where management believes growth is heading next.

That distinction matters because markets are always looking forward.

As I mentioned in one of my posts yesterday, earnings season can create some of the best opportunities we see all year, especially in stocks that normally do not give us an attractive entry.

My selection of cash-secured puts usually narrows during earnings season because I try to avoid selling one through a company’s report. I do not want a single earnings reaction turning an otherwise solid options setup into a position I never intended to own at that price.

When that part of the strategy slows down, my attention shifts toward something different.

I start looking for quality companies that have been hit hard enough to create a potential opportunity to build a position in the shares. Depending on how the setup develops, I may hold that stock longer term or trade it over the next several months for a solid profit.

Those of you who have been following my Deep Dives know that I have done very well with this approach. The goal is not to buy every stock that falls after earnings. The goal is to identify where the market may have overreacted, study what actually went wrong, and then wait for the chart to tell me when the selling is beginning to run its course.

That is why I am breaking down IBM today.

IBM closed Friday at $212.67, down 2.91% during the regular session, but the chart shows a much larger collapse from where the stock traded before the earnings reaction. The company disappointed investors with weaker guidance, acknowledged execution mistakes, and raised questions about how businesses are allocating their technology budgets.

At the same time, Red Hat accelerated, recently acquired businesses performed well, infrastructure demand remained strong, and IBM exited the quarter with a sizable backlog.

That leaves us with an interesting situation.

IBM may now be much more attractive than it was before earnings, but a lower price does not automatically make it a buy.

In this Deep Dive, I am going to explain what went wrong, what parts of the business held up, what the reaction may tell us about the broader technology sector, and exactly what I am watching on the chart.

I will also walk through the price area where I may consider starting a position, the confirmation I need before committing money, the levels where I would consider taking profits, and how I would decide whether to sell everything or leave part of the position open for a larger move.

I’m sitting out today’s session when it comes to opening a new cash secured put.

One of the realities of earnings season is that it naturally shrinks the list of setups. Since I don’t like to hold my cash secured puts through earnings, a lot of otherwise attractive stocks simply aren’t candidates until they’ve reported. That narrows the playing field quite a bit.

The good news is that’s exactly where some of the best opportunities begin to appear.

Once companies report, uncertainty comes off the table. Whether a stock gaps higher, sells off, or simply confirms the business is on track, earnings often create some of my favorite entry opportunities. I’d much rather evaluate a fresh chart after the report than gamble on what might happen before it.

This is also why I spend so much time on my Weekend Deep Dives.

While The Options Oracle focuses heavily on the Wheel Strategy, I also invest outside of it. If I find a high-quality dividend stock I want to own for years, or a strong company that looks attractive as a position trade over the next several months, earnings can provide excellent opportunities to build those positions at favorable prices.

I’m making another trade management move today by closing out my cash-secured put on XYZ and locking in the profit.

Sometimes the hardest part of trading is knowing when to stop asking a good trade to do more than it already has. This is one of those situations where the position has done what I wanted, so I’m happy to take the gain and move on.

✅ XYZ - Taking the Win

I’m closing my Aug. 7 $70 cash-secured put on XYZ today.

Trade Breakdown

• Premium Collected: $300

• Current Value: ~$108

• Profit Captured: ~$192

• Return on Premium: ~64.0%

• Days Remaining: 23

I opened this position on July 8, and in just one week, the trade has already captured 64% of the premium collected.

XYZ has rallied sharply over the past several sessions, and while I don’t necessarily think the move is finished, the chart is beginning to look stretched.

The stock is trading well above its key moving averages, RSI has pushed into the upper-60s, momentum remains strong, and the recent advance has been fast enough that I wouldn’t be surprised to see the stock pause or consolidate before making its next move.

When a trade reaches my profit objective this quickly, I don’t feel the need to keep pressing my luck.

I’d rather lock in the gain, free up the capital, and wait for the next high-probability opportunity.

XYZ has been a solid Wheel performer for me, and the company is scheduled to report earnings on August 8. I’ll simply put it on the shelf, let earnings play out, and revisit it afterward if the setup is still attractive.

🧠 My Take

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that consistency comes from following the same process over and over.

This trade worked well. I captured 64% of the available premium in just one week, the stock has started showing signs of becoming extended after a strong rally, and there’s no reason to overstay the position.

XYZ remains a stock I like and one I’ll continue watching closely.

For now, though, I’m happy to bank the profit, free up the buying power, and wait until after the August 8 earnings report before looking for the next opportunity.

One of the things I like most about today’s trade is that I never had to sit through this pullback. I closed my previous position early, locked in the bulk of the premium, and stepped aside because the stock had become stretched and hit my take-profit level. Now it’s given back enough ground to put another high-quality setup on the table, so I’m rotating right back in.

Today I’m going with a name that doesn’t get me excited because it’s flying higher. It gets my attention because it’s giving me exactly what I want to see...a controlled pullback into an area where I can structure another high-probability Wheel trade.

I don’t mind buying great companies when they’re on sale, and today’s move is giving me that opportunity. Instead of chasing strength, I’m letting the market come to me. I can place my strike well below today’s price, lock in a solid premium, and give myself plenty of room to be right.

That’s exactly how I like to operate. I don’t need to predict where the stock will be next week. I just need to consistently put the odds in my favor, collect premium, and let the process repeat itself.

This is one of those situations where the numbers make the decision pretty straightforward. The trade has worked, the premium has collapsed, and I’d rather have my capital available for the next opportunity than leave it tied up chasing a relatively small remaining return.

I’m closing my Jul. 17 $30 cash-secured put on WYFI today.

WYFI stayed comfortably above my strike price and I’ve now captured more than 82% of the premium with several days still left until expiration.

Could I hold it another four days and try to collect what’s left?

Absolutely.

But from my perspective, the remaining premium simply isn’t enough to justify keeping the position open.

Markets can change quickly over a few trading sessions, and I’d much rather bank a realized gain than expose the position for a relatively small additional reward.

Closing it here also frees up buying power so I’m ready when another quality cash-secured put setup appears.

That’s where I’d rather have my focus.

Trade management isn’t about squeezing every possible dollar out of every position.

It’s about recognizing when a trade has already delivered the majority of its value and knowing when it’s time to move on.

This WYFI position generated exactly what I was looking for:

Delta Air Lines reported what most companies would consider a solid quarter.

They beat earnings expectations, delivered better-than-expected revenue, reaffirmed their full-year guidance, and even issued third-quarter guidance that came in ahead of Wall Street’s estimates.

So why did the stock finish the day down nearly 2%?

That’s the question I wanted to answer because, as investors, it’s easy to look at a headline that says “earnings beat” and assume the stock should move higher. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way.

Sometimes it’s not about what a company did.

It’s about what investors think comes next.

PepsiCo reported its second-quarter results this week, and this was one of those earnings reports where the headline numbers didn’t fully explain the stock’s reaction.

The company earned $2.20 per share, which came in slightly ahead of expectations. Revenue increased 6.4% to $24.18 billion, landing roughly where Wall Street expected, and management kept its full-year outlook in place.

PepsiCo still expects core earnings growth of 5% to 7% and reported revenue growth of 4% to 6% for fiscal 2026.

Those numbers weren’t bad.

The problem was what investors found underneath them.

PepsiCo’s international business continued to perform well, but North America wasn’t nearly as strong as the market wanted to see. Management also acknowledged that improvement in its North American businesses will probably develop more gradually through the rest of the year.

That was the part of the report that mattered most.

Investors weren’t just looking for PepsiCo to beat estimates. They wanted evidence that the problems in North America were beginning to clear up. Instead, the report showed that the company still has work to do, particularly with pricing, beverage volumes, and profitability.

This trade has done exactly what I wanted it to do.

CIFR continued moving higher, the option premium collapsed, and I’ve now captured more than 80% of the available premium with over a week still remaining until expiration.

At this point, the trade has shifted from generating meaningful income to simply occupying buying power.

When a trade has already produced the majority of its potential return, I’d rather lock in the gain, free up the capital, and start looking for the next high-quality setup than stay committed to a position that’s already accomplished its job.

That’s one of the biggest advantages of actively managing cash-secured puts. Capital isn’t sitting idle waiting for expiration. It’s continually being recycled into the next opportunity.

🔁 Covered Call Management

I’m also putting several existing share positions back to work today by writing new covered calls on MARA, OPEN, QBTS, and QUBT.

I’ve attached them below, and the objective is the same as always.

Today’s prices allow me to collect fresh option premium while selecting strike prices where I’d be comfortable selling the shares if they’re called away.

If they expire worthless, I keep the premium and write another round.

If they’re assigned, I lock in the capital gains, keep all the premium collected along the way, and simply rotate the capital back into the next Wheel opportunity.

Either outcome works for me.

HOOD has continued to show impressive strength, and that’s exactly what I wanted to see after entering the trade.

Even with nearly four weeks remaining until expiration, I’ve already captured more than three-quarters of the premium. At this stage the trade has shifted. The easy money has already been made, while the remaining premium comes with another 25 days of market risk and buying power tied up.

I’d rather put that capital back to work when another quality setup presents itself than wait around hoping to collect the final portion of the premium.

That’s how I approach these trades. Once the risk-reward equation changes, I’m happy to move on.

✅ ZETA - Taking the Win and Moving On

I’m also closing my Jul. 31 $17.50 cash-secured put on ZETA.

• Current Value: ~$114

• Profit Captured: ~$206

• Return on Premium: ~64.4%

ZETA has behaved exactly the way I wanted after putting this trade on.

The stock stayed comfortably above my strike, time decay worked in my favor, and more than 64% of the premium has already come in with plenty of time still remaining.

Could I continue holding it?

Of course.

But every trade eventually reaches the point where I start asking a different question:

“Where can this buying power work harder next?”

For me, that’s today.

I’d rather have the flexibility to rotate into the next high-quality setup than leave capital sitting in a trade that’s already accomplished most of its job.

🧠 My Take

These are the kinds of decisions that don’t usually make headlines, but they have a huge impact over time.

Neither of these trades required dramatic moves or complicated adjustments. They simply followed the plan.

By taking profits here, I’m accomplishing three things:

• Locking in realized gains instead of leaving them exposed.

• Freeing up buying power for new opportunities.

• Keeping the Wheel Strategy moving exactly the way it’s designed to.

One of the biggest advantages of this strategy is that capital is constantly cycling from completed trades into fresh setups. That’s how income compounds over time.

I’ll gladly take these wins, put the cash back to work when the next setup appears, and continue repeating the process.
